April 2016: Dividend Update!

April provided me with a solid month of dividend income.Where monthly distributions continue to be the base of my passive income, and a few of my larger quarterly payers such as Algonquin Power, Bank of Nova Scotia and BCE contributed big boosts to my income.

As per usual the first month of a quarter provides me with my largest amount of dividend income, and always provides a nice boost to my total monthly income. April was no exception with $228.15 in total dividend income!

This months total was $0.92 higher than the previously comparable month. There are a few factors at play here which helped the month pull ahead, but also kept it back.

The two dragging factors on April's dividends were the strengthening Canadian Dollar which affected AQN's U.S Dollar dividend, effectively making it pay out less once converted. The second is Dream Office REIT's dividend cut which is still making its impact on my monthly dividend comparisons and overall dividend income. I did like the sizeable positive impact it had on my portfolios Gain/Loss though.

Overall, I am very happy with April's results, that $228 is equal to 20 hours of minimum wage work, great job portfolio! Especially since I did not have to work myself, or do anything special to earn it except sitting tight, ride out any volatility and monitor the companies health. Even had I not been monitoring those companies, I still would have been paid all the same.

  1. Nice job. April is a slow dividend month. Anytime an investor can pull a few hundred dollars on an off month it's a good thing.

    1. Thank you! I think whether each month is slow or not is more dependent on ones portfolio. For me, a larger weighting of the stocks that I own so happen to payout on the first month of each quarter, so I do well. I am trying somewhat actively (opportunities willing) trying to even out my months dividend payouts though.
